The competition is open to all teachers in Bulgaria who understand and accept the importance of media literacy for their students. The competition is part of the “Media Literacy Days 2022” campaign, which is supported by the Small Grants Program at the US Embassy and in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, the Lachezar Tsotzorkov Foundation, UNICEF-Bulgaria, the America for Bulgaria Foundation and the Europe Program of Sofia Municipality.
No matter what subject you teach at school, you could be the winner of the Media Literacy Coalition’s “Media Literacy Through My Subject” contest.
How?
Participants must develop and implement a media literacy lesson across the subject they teach using the Media Literacy Coalition’s handbook of principles and example lessons. It includes 9 sample lessons that can be implemented through both distance and face-to-face learning. The principles on which the lessons are based are appropriate for each subject. They focus on the development of critical thinking, information search and analysis, teamwork, problem solving, the creation of positive and quality digital content and ethical and safe communication in an online environment.
Teachers who want to prepare well for the competition can take part in the free online trainings “Media Literacy Through My Subject”. This is a practical training programme that prepares teachers to develop their students’ media literacy, whatever the subject or medium – online or in person.
Twenty lesson plans developed by teachers who have completed the Media Literacy Through My Subject training can be found in the “Lessons and Presentations” section of the Resources directory on Gramoten.li.
For enrolment in trainings you can see the schedule here.
All teachers who go through the training program and develop their own lesson will receive a certificate of completion for the “Digital Stars of Media Literacy” training. Lessons must be developed and implemented in the classroom by the end of April 2022.
The three best lessons will be awarded a prize package that includes:
Deadline: 30 April 2022
About the Coalition
The Media Literacy Coalition brings together organisations in the fields of education, journalism and civic participation, academics and media literacy experts. The Coalition works for the comprehensive integration of media literacy into the educational process and the enhancement of media literacy in society.
The aim is the development of critical thinking and creative talents, first of all, of children and young people in the digital-media world, but also of all other age groups in Bulgaria.
About the manual and trainings:
The manual and the training program were developed by a team of the Media Literacy Coalition, including experts from the Center for Safe Internet, the Faculty of Primary and Preschool Pedagogy of Sofia University and a history teacher. They are part of the project “Media Literacy through Distance Learning”, implemented by the Coalition for Media Literacy (CML) in 2021 with the support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation.
